Innocent?

The debacle now facing Illinois due to their governor’s arrest reveals the conflict between the demands of our  political system and our rule of law.  Everyone knows the basic tenet of our judicial system  that we are  “Innocent until proven guilty.”   However, now it appears that being charged has become tantamount to being guilty.   What happened to the governor’s right to his day in court?  After all, undermining the rights of anyone, even a governor, reduces Constitutional protections that all of us would need if  charges were made against any one of us!

No one is arguing the illegality nor the immorality in  attempting to sell a senate seat.  But, did he actually do that?  We won’t know until the verdict is read.   And, even then, sometimes justice goes awry because the judge can make bad rulings on evidence or the jury can be blinded by tangential issues.

However, we have to at least try to let the system work.  And, throwing someone out of office, based on an arrest warrant, is not the way our system is supposed to work.  So, is the governor guilty — without a trial — or is he innocent until PROVEN guilty?

Go figure!

My father used to receive over $600/month for Social Security.  Then, the net payment was lowered to $579.00.

However, for next year, he is getting a 5.8% increase due to the rise in the cost of living.  Unfortunately, the Medicare premium he pays will increase and he also must pay $211.90 for the income-related monthly adjustment amount, based on his 2007 income tax return.

His new social security NET income?  $556.00 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A New Generation?

My father and mother started life together so poor that their only asset was a one room cabin which my father had built on land his father gave him.  Yet, through many years of scrimping and saving, and desperately hard work, they became quite wealthy.  Not in the same category as Hollywood stars nor as Bill Gates, but quite comfortable financially.

But, others of their generation, the supposedly Greatest Generation because they won world wars,  decided that someone, somewhere, owed them a great deal.  Social Security was meant to be a supplemental aid to poorer people.  Now, people consider it their “due”.  Pretty soon, that generation formed groups such as the Silver Foxes, or AARP, to lobby for even more.   Seniors routinely expect a cost of living increase to their social security.  They want guarantees for their pension plans.  Almost every store accommodates them with a senior discount.  And, they demanded, and got, Medicare to cover their health expenses.

Is it any wonder that the 20/30/40s generations are demanding the same benefits from “Big Daddy”, a.k.a. Big Government, or us taxpayers?  “They” want to pay less taxes — who doesn’t? — but more payback.  They are demanding:  maternity leave for both parents;  fewer work hours;  higher unemployment;  job security, yada yada.  And, they are demanding that their families be covered by governmentally run health care, too.

The problem is that more and more people are getting money from the government in one form or another and fewer and fewer are being taxed to pay for these payouts.  Where does it end?  Do we really want America to become the land of moochers and not workers?

If this trend of governmental give-aways continues, will anyone work hard for a family business when they know that it will have to be sold to pay estate taxes when the parents pass on?  Will anyone start a new business when they know that the odds are against them because of governmental regulations and taxes?  How do you explain the benefits of hard work to this age group when they see the greed that drove an older generation to morph into a generation with their hand constantly out for more and more “free” benefits?  Somewhere, somehow, we have to stop penalizing those who have succeeded!

Everyone likes to think that they are unique and, in some ways, we are.  But, are our children a new generation?  I think not.  They have learned the lesson of greed and how to use politicians to get more and more of the “good life” at somebody else’s expense.   How sad that a new generation is just more of the same old, same old!

You go, Girl!

An editorialist today suggested that Senator Clinton is not qualified to be Secretary of State in the new administration.  Although obviously true, it is irrelevant.  Experience is no longer a prerequisite for anything in America.  Nope.  If you’re a minority, we will pump up your qualifications until you meet job specifications.  If you’re a minority, you can be President….even when you have no legislative — or any other — experience.

Let’s be realistic.  When the Democratic party rallied behind the least experienced, least knowledgable candidate in the history of our country, they ignored the need for experience!  It’s true that Hillary has no experience in foreign affairs, except for those little tea parties she attended as First Lady.  But, why should the Secretary of State specs be any more challenging than those for the President?    Neither Obama nor Hillary have any experience in running a country or running to foreign countries with our policies, but, in today’s America, that apparently has no bearing on who is the best person for a job.

I can’t say that I have ever supported Hillary for anything.  But,  if it takes her out of the country, as Secretary of State duties will do, I say, “You go, Girl!”

Affirmative Action – the “New Deal”

The other day, I made a comment to someone about my dissatisfaction with the results of the Presidential election.  Immediately, this other person accused me of racism.  And, no matter how many reasons, pretty good reasons to my way of thinking, that I gave, this person insisted my vote had to be based on racism. That is an untrue charge and that person refused to accept my arguments because he didn’t recognize the sweeping, societal changes that have occurred.  In today’s America, a person should be able to choose a candidate, or employee, or friend, based on the individual’s personal qualities, and not the skin color.  To blatantly label any decision not favoring a given ethnic group is racist.

We Americans have changed since the Civil Rights movement began.  We began financial, governmental and legal policies to erase the effects of slavery and the discrimination that stemmed from it.  One response, affirmative action , attempted to reduce  discrimination in college entrances, job promotions, sports, and almost every sphere of American society.  Personally, I think affirmative action in its original form is unAmerican.  Good governmental policies should never hurt one group in order to help another, especially when the helping hand usually meant welfare.  No, market forces actually drove discrimination away.  Discrimination disappeared because it wasn’t economically feasible to keep talented people out of the work force or schools, based on their ethnicity.  After all, we need the most skilled person in every job!

Now, we have a President elect who is half black.  Certainly the presidency carries the greatest prestige of almost any job in the world — and that fact should provide positive proof that discrimination no longer is a determining factor for the majority of Americans!

With Senator Obama’s election, a Black man or Asian woman or Hispanic or just about anyone knows that he/she can achieve whatever he sets out to do in America.  For the last eight years, President Bush’s hiring policies were mostly ignored, but he was a classic example of someone who recognized  an individual’s talents, not the color of package those talents came in.  All of these changes show that Americans want to move past discrimination.  Affirmative action, as originally designed,  no longer is needed and should be eliminated so that we choose the “best”,  available person for every job without consideration of skin color.

It is time for affirmative action to be redefined to mean actively seeking the best person for the job or position….affirming that someone is the right person for the job. Black, Asian, or Hispanic people should not be given extra points just for being non-White because that ultimately destroys their achievement if they succeed.  No.  All should compete on a level playing field and even a White person should have an equal opportunity to compete. Let’s leave racism, or suggestions of racism behind.  Affirmative action can, and should, be the “New Deal”.

Inexperienced

Inexperienced was the obvious winner in last night’s presidential election, and in some senatorial contests, too.  For me, the fact that the Democrats would promote such an inexperienced man with a dubious past has confirmed what I believe the Democratic party has turned into — a power-hungry group of hypocrits who will do and say anything to win.

Witness the slandering of President Bush throughout his presidency.  No matter what happened, the Democrats laid all the blame at his administration’s door.   The slander was bad enough, but the net effect is that the rest of the world felt safe in also criticizing him and also felt safe in not working with him because they knew the Democratic congress would do anything to thwart his efforts.

Maybe the majority of voters was right to elect someone without experience.  We can only wait and see.  However, I fear that my children and grandchildren will not live in a better world than we have.  They will not be able to count on working hard and reaching their goals because higher taxes will cut into their paycheck.  Seniors, such as I, will not be able to retire as early and what we have earned and saved so far will be reduced to the point that we all have to do with less and work longer.

Is it fair?  The black woman who said she wanted Obama elected because then “I won’t have to worry about paying for my car and house” obviously represented a significant portion of the American voting public.  I just wonder what she will say when the better-off Americans and corporations decide they have to tighten their belt to pay higher taxes and thus, cutting jobs is the only answer.  Maybe she will lose her own job, car or house.  Will she be so happy then?

No one knows because no one has ever lived with a President this inexperienced before.  We all hope for the best, but I fear that we are going to experience a far harsher country where our young people no longer dream because they know the government will control their every move through financial strictures, such as higher taxes and fees on individuals and business.

Inexperienced?  This is the new standard and new reality of politics.  Experience the inexperienced!

LIEberals and Media Hypocrisy

On a trip this week, I had to listen to some “kid” expound on how much he hated Governor Palin. He used every single insult and slur that the Obama camp has provided, courtesy of the media. If there had been a chance, I would gladly have explained why Senator McCain and Governor Palin are the best choice, but he was not ready to listen, only rant and rave. His ignorance is a direct result of the media letting Democrats trash any and every conservative thought, person, or issue.

Since Governor Palin is obviously MORE qualified than Senator Obama, it befuddles me that the media lets the Lieberals (spelling intentional) continue to throw out nasty comments without any challenges. How can the head honchos allow this constant, repetitious, and nauseating bias to continue? I don’t understand it.

Nor did I understand the venom of this kid. I support Senator McCain and Governor Palin, but I do not hate the Democrats. He absolutely hates Republicans. It is unfortunate that he couldn’t see the hypocrisy of his stance because he kept ridiculing Governor Palin’s executive experience and yet he had no problem with Senator Obama’s complete lack of ANY experience, other than raising money!

That’s being a complete LIEberal!

Murtha

He’s at it again — throwing slurs and insults out left and right…………well, only to the right.

What kind of man is he to disparage others, grouping them into “racists” and then “rednecks”,  just because they don’t agree with him?

Here’s more proof that Murtha is the intolerant person.

Black man FOR other Black Man

So, where’s the surprise in Colin Powell endorsing the Democratic nominee?  Both are black men and the media routinely gloats that 95% of black Americans will vote for the black candidate.  No one questions if it is okay for black people to unanimously vote for black candidates, but any white who is for Senator McCain is routinely villified for his “racism” !!!!

Only in America would it be politically correct for almost 100% of an ethnic group to vote, based on their candidate being “one of them”, and no one asks about racism on their part!

It’s the issues, Stupid!

Ah, yes, the good old days when the voting public actually studied the issues of the day.  Ah, the good old days when the media actually reported the news of the day, and not their biased view of current events.  And when you could discuss politics and the word “racist” never occurred!

Nowadays, unless you agree to vote for the Democratic nominee, you are considered racist.  Forget the fact that you like Senator McCain and Governor Palin for their personal standards of morality, their views on Iraq, or their views about protecting all Life.

Under the guise of political correctness, a new standard of racism has appeared and it is directly linked to the black community.  The liberal elite promote the notion that only whites can be racists, but that is absolutely not true.  In fact, anyone who accepts that “all” blacks will vote for Obama BECAUSE HE IS HALF BLACK is condoning such racism   Any honest person knows that there is virtually NO candidate who will garner 95%, or more, of a single constituency.  Yet, even the liberal media admits that blacks are expected to vote for Senator Obama almost exclusively.  And, almost every African American questioned  will deny that they are voting for the Democrat because he is half- black.   Oh, no.  The black community is in complete agreement with the issues presented by Senator Obama.

Well, that hypocricy was completely exposed by a simple series of interviews conducted by a radio station in Harlem.  When the station presented Senator McCain’s stance on issues, but pretended that these were Obama’s beliefs, the people questioned said they were quite happy with the issue!  So much for voting for the Democratic nominee because of his views!

Here is the proof, if you care to listen:
